Colonel James Wheeler - Outreach Director

Lieutenant Colonel, Retired, Jim Wheeler, joined the Valor Health Team in December 2007 as Vice President and Regional Director for Veterans Outreach.

Prior to joining Valor, Colonel Wheeler served 10 years as the County Veterans Service Officer (VSO) for Denton County, Texas. During his tenure as a VSO he served as the Regional Director of the County Veterans Service Officers Association of Texas and as the state president in 2007. In addition to serving the 40,000 veterans of Denton County, he founded Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 920, the largest forming chapter in the history of the organization and served as its first president. Colonel Wheeler is also a charter member of Military Order of the Purple Heart (MOPH) Chapter 768 and served as its commander for two years. He is also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 2205, The American Legion, Post 71, Disabled American Veterans, Chapter 106 and is a life member of the Military Officers Association of America. He is particularly proud to be a member of the 4th Infantry Division Association, the Division that he was assigned to during his two tours of duty in Vietnam.

Prior to his role as VSO, Jim had a 10 year career in the banking profession in El Paso, Texas, principally as a lender and branch manager. He retired from banking as a vice president.

Colonel Wheeler served 21 years in the U.S. Army as an Airborne Infantry Officer. His tours of duty took him to multiple postings in the continental United States, Alaska, France and two tours of duty in Vietnam.

Colonel Wheeler’s military awards and decorations include: the Soldier’s Medal, the Bronze Star Medal with “V”alor device with three oak leaf clusters, the Purple Heart Medal with three oak leaf clusters, the Meritorious Service Medal with one oak leaf cluster, Air Medal with numeral three, the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry, the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Vietnam Service Medal with one silver star and five bronze stars and the Parachutist Badge, among many others.

His education includes a bachelor’s degree in business from the University of Nebraska at Omaha and a master’s degree in management from Webster University, St. Louis, Mo.
